Set: Two environments exist simultaneously: Lillian's living room in an upscale high-rise, and the Beast's shoddy apartment across town.

Lillian Davis, a metropolitan housewife of inconsequential regard, sets out to write her last will and testament in her apartment on the 27th floor of a respectable, rent-controlled building. As she inventories her possessions, the hairs on the back of her neck stand up. There is a Beast watching her every move, spying on her through a telescope from the window of his apartment halfway across town. As Lillian flashes forward and backward through her life with her husband Ned and her daughter Norma, the Beast comes closer and closer to Lillian's home, until she can no longer ignore him.

"Regarding matters of the heart, [16 Spells to Charm the Beast] describes the pain and beauty of our lives with a lyricism bordering on enchantment."
